What is Trauma and How do we Deal with It? Sever encounters in the past can leave a person in trauma or have a traumatic experience and in this experience it is the emotion that has taken the better hold of a person than his reasoning which therapists are aware of. The behavior of the person becomes irrational because what dictates the behavior is the need for survival and nothing else. It is because the mind is no longer in control that people in trauma experiences this traumatic despair that is scary, frightening, painful, and not bound by time. The irrational behavior displayed by a person who has undergone trauma is a behavior of survival because when one is confronted with something that reminds them of that traumatic incident, the rational sense of past and future shuts down and the emotions take over. When someone is in that state where visual imagery, rapid observation, and complex breathing takes place, this is an indication that the brain does not want to resolve this trauma. For a therapist then, the problem is how to get back their rational brain function to be upfront again so that the person can start to think clearly; start to learn that that traumatic experience happened in the past, and therefore it is not now anymore or that there is no threat to talk about in the first place. This is an exercise that a therapist must resolve.

When a person is under trauma, there are certain stress chemicals that the body produces that has no outlet. This so-called stress response get triggered when the adrenals receives a distress message from the brain and releases adrenalin and cortisol, two hormones that is commonly called fight or flight” responses. A person freezes when he is trapped and stuck because he cannot fight and he cannot flee because the hormone is dissipated. This then is trauma.

There is a boost of oxygen and glucose supply to the brain and muscles when the fight or flight hormones are released into the blood stream. Blood vessels and air passages are then dilates. In other words, the body is able to pass more blood to the muscles and get more oxygen into the lungs. Therefore physical exercise is one good way to dispel hormonal disorders and prevent patients from suffering chemical imbalance in the brain instead of pumping relaxants and other forms of medication. Learning how to relax the body is another helpful approach. In a relaxed body, the rational part of the brain can function more prominently than its emotional part. And a lot of trauma therapy sessions is based on putting the body and the mind in a relaxed state. It would also include an exposure to traumatic memories. With an objective mind, the trauma healing can have more success.
